Welcome to the official website of the International Conference on Southern Hemisphere Meteorology and Oceanography (ICSHMO) 2025!
We are thrilled to announce that, after nearly three decades, this prestigious event returns to the African continent, with the vibrant city of Cape Town, South Africa, as our host. Last held in Africa in 1997, this conference marks a significant milestone as we gather once again to explore, discuss, and advance the understanding of meteorological and oceanographic sciences in the Southern Hemisphere.
ICSHMO 2025 promises to be an extraordinary gathering of scientists, researchers, and professionals from around the globe, offering a platform for the exchange of innovative ideas, cutting-edge research, and groundbreaking developments. This conference is particularly pertinent today as the world faces numerous environmental challenges, including the impacts of climate change. According to the 2024 Global Risk Report, extreme weather events are identified as the most significant risks the world will confront over the next decade.
This instalment of the conference is a particularly special occasion as it will highlight the upcoming release of the updated Monograph of the Meteorology of the Southern Hemisphere that was first authored by Professor Harry van Loon and published in 1972 and updated in 1998 by Professors David J. Karoly and Dayton Vincent and was launched at the 5th ICSHMO in 1997 in Pretoria, South Africa. ICSHMO 2025 marks the return of this prestigious event to African soil and therefore the monograph will have gone full circle as we anticipate its latest edition. The editorship of the current instalment is led by Associate Professor Andrea Taschetto (University of South Wales, Australia), Associate Professor Thando Ndarana (University of Pretoria, South Africa) and Professor Tercio Ambrizzi (University of Sao Paulo, Brazil).
We invite you to join us in Cape Town, a city renowned for its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and commitment to sustainability. Together, let’s make ICSHMO 2025 a memorable and transformative event that propels our collective efforts in meteorology and oceanography to new heights.
